This Year In Advisory

Discussion by: 15RudolphE on Mon, 2012-06-11 21:35 with 0 comments

As the school year comes to an end, I stop and reflect upon the classes that I have had this year, in particular, advisory. I think that I have taken for granted that in just these 35 minutes every school day, I have learned so much and have really become more attuned to not only my educational growth in school, but my social growth as well. I have learned how to expand my ideas upon books that I have read, and also, discuss with other people my age everything that is generally happening around us.

This week and HIV

This week all of our advisory classes were on the topic of HIV and AIDS. We learned about the immune system as a basis of what happens when you get HIV, and then we talked about prevention and transmission. Even though I have learned about this subject every single year since I was at this school, I think that the refreshment of facts is an enforcement in every single student's memories to just be as safe as possible and make the right decisions. Making the right decisions can help you reach your full potential in life and succeed to the fullest extent.

Abstinence

We have just finished a discussion in class about abstinence during our HIV unit in advisory. My point of view on this topic is that I respect everyone's decisions to be abstinent or not, as long as they make the right choice for themselves. Being abstinent is definitely the safer way to go when it comes to making healthy decision, but I cannot deprive anyone of their right of actions, so I won't be prejudice about it either.

HIV/AIDS

HIV/AIDS is a huge problem that is affecting the lives of million of people today. Teens are specially the most prone to getting it due to known teenage risky and reckless behavior. Over the years, I have been educated about how to prevent this disease and other sexually transmitted diseases. It is a very sensitive topic that many would rather not talk about, but I think it is so much better to be uncomfortable or embarrassed for a few minutes while you learn about it than make mistakes that will make you uncomfortable for the rest of your life.

One of the presents that I got for Christmas this year from my sister was a subscription to the Food Network Channel Magazine. It was one of my favorite presents.

I have just finished reading the collection of stories in Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul II. In my previous post, I said that I had already read the first Chicken Soup book for teenagers, and enjoyed it so much that I went on to read the follow-up. In all honesty, this would not exactly be my first book of choice, but I still liked it. Some of the stories, as I had discussed before as well, were a little bit outdated, but the message in each one was still very present.

Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul II

I have just recently begun reading the book Chicken Soup for The Teenage Soul II by various authors. It is the second edition of the first book, of which I read already some time ago and liked so much that I began reading the first. The whole idea of the book is that it is a bunch of short stories under different sections pertaining to things that teenagers go through. I think that the whole purpose of this book is to reach out to teenagers and connect to them, saying that whatever they are going through, minor or big, chances are that someone has gone through it before.

Research Method that I prefer

One method of research that I have developed a preference towards has to do with utilizing Google Reader with my Google account. I think that to me, this has been the most effective method of searching for information in a more targeted way for my topics. Google reader has also been something that I have been following up in my spare time, as it provides me with interesting articles and news on a topic that I am always interested in learning more about: food and nutrition.

Food Lables

Something that I have been interested in learning more about has been nutrition and food. I remember growing up with a variety of experiences with it and what I now consider as an art, but not knowing enough about it to really be as interested as I am now. Lately, the issue has caught my eye again. I know that may people feel that food is something that is insignificant compared to many other affairs that are going on in the world, but to me, this isn't so.

"Intense Aromas Lead To Smaller Bites" by Nancy Shute

I was very, very interested in Nancy Shute's article, "Intense Aromas Lead to Smaller Bites," from Intense Aromas Lead to Smaller Bites
Shute, N. (2012) Intense Aromas Lead to Smaller Bites. NPR, [online] March 2012. Available at: http://www.npr.org/blogs/thesalt/2012/03/21/149062559/intense-aromas-lea... [Accessed: March 22, 2012]. It was an article mainly discussing how a study was conducted and showed that when a person is given a for with a more intense or strong aroma, they are more likely to make their bites smaller.
