Many of the year's most highly anticipated movies come out just before Thanksgiving, and that is certainly the case this year with the release of "Twilight" and "Australia."  America is obsessed with movies, and we spend A LOT of money going to see them.  All the hype surrounding this month's movies (particularly Twilight) made me curious about which movies are the highest grossing of all time, and how those movies compare with the movies considered to be the best of all time. The highest grossing movie  is "Titanic" followed by "The Dark Knight." Next comes, "Star Wars: Episode IV- A New Hope," "Shrek 2," "E.T.-Extra Terrestrial," "Star Wars: Episode I -The Phantom Menace," "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest," "Spider Man," "Star Wars: Episode III-Revenge of the Sith," and "The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King."

Clearly, these were all good movies, but "The Dark Knight" is the only one that also makes IMDd's list of the top ten best movies of all time. According to IMDd, the best movie of all time is "The Shawshank Redemption," followed by "The Godfather," "The Godfather: Part 2," "The Dark Knight," "Buono, il bruttoil cattivo, I1, "Pulp Fiction," "Schindler's List," "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," "Star Wars: Episode V" and "12 Angry Men." Many people, including myself, probably disagree with this ranking, (where is "Gone With the Wind?") but one thing is clear, while the majority of the highest grossing movie are relatively modern, that is not necessarily the case with movies considered to be the best of all time. Apparently special effects aren't everything.
