The photo “Cacophony” is a still life taken of piano music. There were a few reasons why I chose this image. First and foremost, I am a pianist and I like the look of piano music. So for this reason, I chose this picture from the negative because I liked the look of the contrasting music notes with the dark backgrounds. The second reason was it was probably the still life that I took that had the most in focus. My problem is I still haven’t figured out of to take depth of field pictures. So, all of the still life pictures I took did not come out.
I think that this image exemplifies the assignment well because it has nice diagonals that make your eye move around the picture even though it is a small focus moment. This still life has many compositional elements. One being, as I said before, it has well defined diagonals. The diagonals are in the different books. Each book represents a different diagonal because they are not all placed straight but messy. The different music notes and ledger lines even represent diagonals. The color scheme of mostly grey creates a nice soft look. It is not so soft, though, that it is not interesting because the white paper stands out against the black background.
I faced many technical problems with this photo. As I said before it wasn’t very in focus. Because of this I had to crop out the top of the photo so the majority of the picture was in focus. I also had to burn in some of the edges where the paper was white.
I think that the name Cacophony is a good name because it means a mess of music. I think that the scattered pages and opened book creates a feeling of messed up music. I think that I would want viewers to feel like they wanted to play music when they walked away from this picture.
